Undergraduate Summer Internships in Proteomics

Tentative dates: May 24th-July 30th, 2027

Hosted by the IDeA National Resource for Quantitative Proteomics

The Internship Program is designed to provide a unique opportunity for the next generation of scientists to explore an alternative career option in biomedical research by gaining experience in a national resource and core facility environment. Each year 2 undergraduate students from academic laboratories across the United States will be selected to spend 9-10 weeks during the summer in the IDeA National Resource for Quantitative Proteomics working on a project relevant to human health. This internship will provide exposure to daily operations and best business practices in a national resource environment. Interns will interact with core facility users and gain experience in experimental design, sample preparation, data collection and analysis of the proteomic data.

Mission:

•    Provide a unique opportunity for the next generation of scientists to explore alternative career options in biomedical research by gaining experience in a national resource and core facility environment.

•    Provide on-site training to undergraduate students in state-of-the- art proteomics workflows (experimental design, sample prep, data collection, and bioinformatics)

Logistics:

•    Internship includes a $8,000 stipend, along with university privileges for the participants residing on campus including use of the library, computer labs, and recreational facilities.

•    A $400 travel award is available for each participant for travel to a national conference or regional scientific meeting to present their research in the year following the internship.

•    Interns participate in activities including talks on scientific ethics, CV preparation, scientific communication (written and oral), and social activities with other undergraduate students.

•    Participating students will prepare a paper in journal format and a poster presentation at the Annual Arkansas Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium (ARURS) at the end of the program.

Requirements:

•    Interested applicants will be required to participate in a pre-submission consultation to discuss career goals and to communicate information on the internship opportunity.

•    Open to undergraduate students who will be rising juniors or seniors majoring in science (i.e biology, chemistry or a related major)

•    Selection criteria for the internship include the students GPA, faculty recommendations, and a student’s interest in a career in research.

•    Applications will be electronic and made through a Piestar portal
